This is the largest decision to be made by the Forest of Dean District Council since its formation in 1973.

This consultation is asking for responses to the Council’s ‘preferred option’.
The ‘preferred option’ of a new town has sadly been endorsed by Cabinet and Council but is very much open to public consultation.
The details of this option that are OPEN for CONSULTATION are as follows:
Development at the Beachley army camp (600 homes)
Development at Newent (500 homes)
A new settlement/town where the A40 & A48 meet in Churcham (a phased development of 2 phases of 2000 homes each) This document only refers to the first phase of this new settlement but council officials have confirmed that the new settlement will indeed be 4000 homes.
These sites are all required to provide housing, employment, green space and community facilities although this document does not go into detail about what these would be or who would provide them.
The new settlement must:
Benefit the Forest of Dean district as a whole
Be sustainable
Have scope for good transport connections
Address climate change
Support the economy
Protect the environment
Deliver affordable housing
In addition more development at other sites will continue and new sites are outlined in the Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA)
The council are asking the public to comment on this ‘preferred option’ to support it, modify it, propose alternative development sites or suggest any other changes.
Please give the Forest of Dean District Council some feedback about this, before the consultation ends on 29th January 2021.
